Informal learning is impromptu, spontaneous learning, or learning “on the fly”. When we are young, this is the first way we learn, and we continue to use Informal learning fairly regularly in the workplace too. It can happen whenever learners see something of value that can help them perform better.
While the jury is divided on the benefits and the impact of Informal training, we believe that instead of having a Formal vs Informal training debate, the right approach is to encourage a blend of both in the workplace. This judicious blend can meet your organization’s training needs and learning outcomes, and more significantly, help create a culture that promotes “learning as a continuum.”
The success of Informal learning rests significantly on the learner (someone who is focused, motivated, and is on a look-out for knowledge resources or knowledgeable individuals who will help them do better).
